Speechmarks

We're delighted to announce the fourth issue of "speechmarks", our tribute to the richness and endless variation of the English language!

Our autumn issue leads with an analysis of the (mis)use of multiple negatives. Multiple negation is used so frequently in the English language and it can take a lot of effort to unravel the sentence only to discover the meaning is far from the intention. Nevertheless, the human brain seems able to pick up the intention and ignore the superfluous negation.

Why not take a moment to try our logic teaser to test your skills in reasoning?

The second article takes a closer look at writing styles and the use of the passive and active voice. The active voice can make a translation read more naturally, like an original piece of writing whereas the passive can give the text a sense of authority and the appearance of fact-based discourse. The selection will, in most cases, depend on the style of the source text and the target audience.
