The English language is the native tongue of over 300 million people, the second language of tens of millions more and the official language of over a dozen countries. It is the closest mankind has ever come to a 'world language' and Speechmarks is our quarterly tribute to its endless variation and richness. The editorial brief is to be educational though not scholastic, entertaining though not trivial and thought-provoking without contention.
